Per Capita Tax Information & Definition

Definition: Per Capita Tax is a tax levied by a taxing authority (in this case; Weatherly Borough) to everyone over 18 years of age or older residing in their jurisdiction. “Per Capita” means “by head”, so this tax is commonly called a head tax. The school district as well as the township or borough in which you reside may levy a Per Capita tax.

Landlords in Weatherly Borough are required to report tenants to the Borough Office even if the tenants are family members.

PLEASE NOTE: Mortgage companies DO NOT PAY PER CAPITA TAXES. Per Capita taxes must be separated and removed from any other taxes received and paid separately to the tax collector.

  • Per capita tax in the amount of $5.00 is imposed on each and every resident and inhabitant of Weatherly Borough that is 18 years of age or older.
  • Per capita tax in the amount of $10.00 is imposed on each and every resident of the Weatherly Area School District that is 18 years of age or older.

Regarding students/young adults’ responsibility to pay Per Capita Tax

The permanent address of a college student/young adult will be considered to be that of their parents (who reside in Weatherly Borough in this case) until that student/young adult has relocated due to graduation or job employment. Relocation is determined when a new permanent residence with address changes to driver’s license, voter registration and/or other important documents has taken place. When the tax collector is notified of the change in permanent address, that student/young adult will be removed from the Per Capita Tax listing.

Note: There are no exonerations or exclusions for per capita tax.

Payment of Tax Bills: Separate checks/money orders are needed as payment for tax bills. Please follow these examples:

  • Weatherly Borough real estate and per capita tax bills are issued annually on April 1st and can be paid together on one check or money order. Do Not include county or school amounts in THIS payment.
  • Carbon County real estate/ debt service tax bills are issued annually on April 1st and can be paid with a separate check or money order. Do Not include borough or school amounts in THIS payment.
  • Weatherly Area School District real estate and per capita tax bills are issued annually on July 15th and can be paid together on one check or money order. Do Not include borough or county amounts in THIS payment.
